You’re Getting Fat!

“Babe, your thighs are looking a little chunky there in my boxers.”

I was startled out of my daydreaming. That was the sound of my husband’s voice but clearly, I wasn’t hearing the words spoken accurately. Did my husband just tell me I am getting fat?

I have a habit of wearing his boxers around the house and as I waddled up the stairs to our bedroom those were the words I heard coming out of his mouth. He was behind me.

“Did you just call me fat?” I said challengingly.

“Your thighs didn’t use to look like that in my boxers.”

“Like what?” I said threateningly, as I spun around to look directly at him.

“So big.” He said matter of factly. “Did you gain some weight?”

I was horrified! My husband did just call me fat.

I tried to answer but I stumbled over my words because this was a completely new one in our marriage. My sweet, dear husband, who, on my worst days always has something nice to say to me about my weight was now telling me I was fat. How many times have I squeezed into a dress that was obviously too tight and asked him if I looked fat and he always told me I looked “great”. I could feel and even look like a bloated pig and my darling husband always tells me I look great, he has always maintained that I am not fat yet here he was staring defiantly at my thunder thighs while asking if I had gained weight.

I was so hurt. I felt the tears forming in the corner of my eyes. Don’t blink, Racquel, don’t blink. I felt defeated. I was so hurt I couldn’t even get mad. Truth be told I had packed on the pounds, quite a bit of it too.
I sighed and tried hard not to let my husband see how much his innocent words had affected me, “Yeah, I think I gained a little.”
“How much?” He asked. Oh my Gawd, why won’t he stop talking???!!!
“I’m not sure.” I lied.
Of course, I knew how much weight I had gained. I weigh myself at least twice a week. I have been doing so for years. I had noticed the numbers steadily climbing for quite some time now but I was in denial. At first, I fooled myself into thinking it was muscle gain, after all, I lifted weights regularly in the gym; then my clothes started getting super snug and I explained that away since clothes generally shrink after a while when you wash and or dry clean them so, of course, that’s the reason my clothes were now tight. I was in major denial.😟
A few days later, hubby and I were getting dressed to attend our annual Christmas Ball and the zipper on my gown would not go all the way up.
WTF??!!!
Luckily, my Mom was visiting for the Holidays and was able to do some kind of trick with the zipper allowing me to still wear the gown but boy was I uncomfortable all night. I looked gorgeous in the dress, take a look at The Good, The Bad & The Downright Ugly but I didn’t feel gorgeous at all. When you stop feeling gorgeous that’s when you know it’s time for a change.

Weight Watchers

As clichΓ© as it sounds, I decided that I would embark on a new, healthier me for the New Year. I had some success on Weight Watchers back in 2010 so a few days after the Christmas Ball, while examing the increase in cellulite on my thighs, as my husband’s words replayed on repeat in my head, I joined WW again.

I had heard about the Keto diet, which seems to be all the rage these days so I did some research on it but I wasn’t interested in trying anything which forced me to eliminate entire food groups. I needed something sustainable, a program that I could possibly keep doing for the rest of my life, as such I joined WW on December 31, 2018, and I am happy to report that it’s been 3.5 months and I am still sticking to the program.

My favorite thing about WW is that you can eat pretty much anything, no foods are forbidden, as long as you don’t go over your allotted caloric intake, or as Weight Watchers calls it your “points”. Mind you, those points go extremely fast.

When I first joined WW my daily allotted points would be all gone by lunchtime. I would freak out because it would literally be midday and I would have consumed all my daily calories. This frequent occurrence forced me to turn to the zero points food in order to sustain me throughout the rest of the day.

WW has named quite a number of foods such as grilled chicken breast, vegetables, and fruits zero points food. You’re permitted to eat as much of these foods as you want and not use any of your daily points. These zero points foods have saved me many times but it had gotten to the point where if I ate one more grilled chicken salad (without dressing) for dinner I was going to keel over and die. 😁

I hate boring food, and I especially detest vegetables. I am not much of a broccoli, eggplant, kale kind of person. I am a carnivore – a kind of meat and potatoes kind of gal so this is where I had to learn portion control. I had to exercise discipline and cut my eyes past that 10-ounce ribeye and instead whet my appetite with a more reasonable portion. Man, that was/is hard.

Portion control is the most difficult part of the program for me. I still struggle with eating just a cup of chips instead of ripping open a bag of Lays Wavy while reading and just popping a few pieces in my mouth every few minutes until the entire bag is gone.

I have developed some healthy habits on the program though, like juicing. Since I don’t like eating my vegetables (I swear I sound like a 4-year-old πŸ˜ƒ) I had to learn to juice them and mix them with fruits in order to make it more palatable. The Nutri Bullet which I have had sitting in my kitchen cabinet for years has proven to be a godsend.

Exercise

Another great thing about Weight Watchers is that you get to eat your activity points. The more you exercise the more you get to eat. Each and every activity you can think of, even something as simple as walking the dog, is outlined in the WW app and has points value attached to it. Therefore, the longer I stay on the elliptical, the more points I get back so that I can devour that 10-ounce ribeye. πŸ˜‰

I challenge myself daily to see how much activity points I can attain just so I can eat them later that day. If I want to have that martini or glass of wine then I have to stay on that treadmill or in the weight room or do an extra challenging class so I can earn that reward, this forces me to workout at least 5 days a week. Thankfully, I actually like working out and enjoy (yes, I said enjoy) going to the gym.

It’s been 3.5 months and as of this morning, I’m officially down 21.2 pounds. The first 10 pounds seem to come off steadily, then I struggled to get down to a 15-pound loss, and I can’t even begin to tell you how difficult it was to reach 20. It seemed as if each and every time I got down to a 20 lb loss, that I’d wake up the next morning and gain back a pound or two sometimes even three. It’s a nightmare! I’m still not even comfortable announcing the 20+ lbs weight loss because it has been a struggle to maintain and sometimes it feels as if I have plateaued.

Plateaued or not, I am not about to give up because the non-scale victories blow my mind, like the fact that I can now fit in clothes I haven’t worn in years, that my jeans no longer pinch my inner thighs, that I can actually see a reduction in my cellulite (even though they aren’t all gone), that I have lost inches off of my waist (my girlfriend told me recently that my waist looked “snatched”), that I feel stronger, that my skin is glowing, that I can now see my collar-bone and my husband, the one who started all of this, has remarked that I shouldn’t “lose too much weight” because he doesn’t “like skinny girls”. πŸ˜‰

Good for you for sticking to it Racquel. It’s a struggle, but it’s awesome to see you get in front of it.

It’s also incredibly valuable that you and your husband can be so open and honest with each other. It can be challenging from time to time, but at least there is no mind reading attempts between you two.

    1. Yeah, 007, my weight has fluctuated a great deal over the years but within recent years it has been steadily climbing. I hate seeing the big numbers on the scale.

It’s a struggle alright, no doubt about that but WW is doable since I don’t have to eliminate anything from my diet.

My husband is way too honest sometimes but hey his brutal honesty is what help kick my butt into gear so for that I am thankful.

    1. What did you think of the story? Did you mind your role in it? Would you like to return for the second book “The Arzen Chronicles: Winter Kill”? I was thinking that if you did, I would have you as more a main/involved character, and be more of an action figure, with me and Bond. Would you like to or not?

      1. Rachael, your story was excellent! Very well written.

I didn’t mind my role in it at all. Are you kidding?! I am honored that you thought of me. A return? Only if it’s in your pleasure. Absolutely.

I wanted to comment under your story but it doesn’t allow me to comment, only to like it. Either way, it was brilliantly written and I truly enjoyed it.

Hey, in ‘Winter Kill’ I was thinking that at the end you and Britchy join me, Coffee and J-M’s group of heroes (for lack of better term). Would you like a heroic title for yourself? If so, I’m not sure what to call you, so if you would like that, what would you call yourself?

Feel free to name my character whatever you think is suitable. My job has been keeping me extremely busy so unfortunately I haven’t had time to read your stories. When I do come on to WordPress, it’s usually for the quick reads then I disappear again back to Court and all that good stuff.

Thanks for including me in your stories. I plan to read them in it’s entirety someday.

  8. I joined WW too, and I’m having a hard time. I’ve been doing it a while and I don’t have a problem with staying within my allotted points. My problem is that I will eat zero – 7 points all day long and ‘save’ the rest for snacking. UGH. I’ll eat chocolate and chips and whatever with all the extra points. WTH is wrong with me? That’s not going to help! Lol. You look amazing, my friend! Keep up the good work! ❀

    1. Hey Deb! Nice to hear you’re on WW too. When did you join? Have you lost any weight yet?

I think it’s okay to snack on the chocolate and chips as long as you don’t go over your daily points. I do too. I have my cravings 2 or 3 times a week and I give into them, but I make sure to only do so when I have enough points in the bank, that means my activity points since I ALWAYS finish my daily points.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with you, Deb! We all have our cravings and it’s better to give into them than ignore them (as long as you have the points for them).

Thanks, my friend, I feel amazing!!!! I’m excited to reach my goal weight. πŸ’œ

You are probably aware of the fact, that we Caribbean men love women with more meat on their bones.

Anyway, adopting a vegan diet along with a vegan lifestyle will help you to remain slim.

Now, I read the part where you mentioned that you hated vegetables; however, vegetables are a great source of fibre, vitamins and minerals.

    1. Renard, you’re in no way being “out of place” or “disrespectful”. In fact, I agree with you, I think I am thick in the right places but I was getting a tad bit too thick, if ya know what I mean?

Vegan diet??? Vegan lifestyle??? Whoa, Renard! Did you not read that I am an unapologetic carnivore. Yeah, the whole vegan thing sounds blasphemous to me. πŸ˜‚ I appreciate the suggestion but no thanks.

I am getting my fiber. I am drinking my veggies now. πŸ˜‰

      1. πŸ™‚ Veganism can help greatly in the area of keeping any excessive weight off and you can eat as much as you want.

However, it is always up to you to do whatever it is that you like. So, technically speaking, you are free to be an unapologetic carnivore.

      2. We each know our bodies and most importantly we know ourselves. I would never be able to sustain a 100% vegan diet. If I even tried I would perhaps be able to do it for weeks, maybe even months, but never for years, or even a year. WW, on the other hand, promotes a lifestyle change and that’s something I would be able to sustain.

  11. At first I thought your husband called you “phat”, but that expression’s been out of use since around 1998, I think. Also this reminds me that somewhere I read a scientific study that women with a little extra weight tend to live longer but men who tell women they’ve got extra weight don’t. Your husband seems like a decent guy, though, and I’m sure he meant well.
Anyway the important thing is congratulations! You’re doing an amazing job and staying healthy too, which is a good thing.

    1. Hi Chris,

Before I even get into my post and respond to your comment I have to let you know that I have been catching up on your blog posts earlier this morning and I have attempted to comment on a few of them and I keep getting an error message. Like, what gives?

Why can’t I comment on your posts? It’s driving me crazy because I am being denied the pleasure of sharing with you my undeniable wit; πŸ˜‰ but seriously, do you have any idea what’s up with that?

Now to my dear, sweet hubby. It’s true he meant well. He wasn’t being a jerk or mean, he just wanted me to know that he noticed that I had “gained weight”. In his defense he never used the words “fat” or “phat”, even though I might have been flattered by the latter, but he was being observant.

Did the “boxers” comment sting a little? It sure did but it got me motivated to push away from the table and enroll in a weight loss program instead of resting on my laurels making excuses for myself. 😁

  14. I love the holiday dress and congrats on your progress
But I actually do not agree with the weight watchers protocol

I am not trying to challenge but it all
    Comes
Down to gut health – getting satisfied from food and forgetting about portions
-and bottom line is that the most dangerous foes for gut health – and weight – and a strong immune system – because the gut is our second brain-
    Well grains are bad news
    – especially for certain blood types and if someone already has stuff going on (lie candidiasis)
And the sugars and industrial oils are making people sick!

Check out marks daily apple for a few good reads / and my husband makes a Friday video that addresses this very topic –
    He used to
Work out 6 days a week – and for a long time
But when he changed his eating and eliminated the bad industrial oils – the sugars that do Impair immunity and metabolism – well he works out less and his body is where he wants it.
    Just some food for thought

    1. Hi P,

Thank you for the compliment on the holiday dress. If you could only see what was happening in the back though. πŸ˜‚

It’s okay not to agree with the Weight Watchers protocol. WW is not for everyone. A lot of people get turned off by the itsy, bitsy, minute amount of calories/points that they’re allotted.

I am one of those people, who gets a thorough annual physical just because and fortunately for me I have always gotten a clean bill of health from my doctors – blood pressure in range, low cholesterol, steady heartbeat, reasonable amount of endurance and strength, flexibility etc. Despite what and how I have eaten over the years I am healthy. πŸ™‚

I am not a fan of labeling any kinds of food “bad”. I believe in everything there should be moderation. Some people will tell you fried chicken is bad for you. I love fried chicken but clearly I can’t eat it every day or even once a week, it has to be done in moderation.

I also don’t believe in eliminating any food groups. It just doesn’t work for me. I admire people who have the discipline to eliminate certain food groups from their diets completely and stick with it. Sustainability is the key to successful nutrition for me so the elimination of entire food groups just doesn’t work well for me.

Thankfully, my immunity is not impaired and my metabolism seems to be headed in the right direction these days.

I honestly don’t mind working out several times per week, the benefits of exercise is numerous, apart from the increased metabolism it also lifts my mood and does wonders for my skin. No matter what kind of mood I am in before a workout I am guaranteed to be happy with a kickass positive attitude after a solid workout so if I can get that feeling several times a week then why not.

Thanks for your input, P. I enjoy our discourses.

      1. Thanks for the wonderful reply – and it really took me a while to see the truth – like a lightbulb comes on – because we have been brainwashed.
        Weight watchers is expensive
It is cab loaded which hurts you in the long run
I know some that would argue the extr packaging (that you pay money for) also tinges your food
Size – calorie counting and portion control are all restrictive ways to long term lifestyle of eating plenty and feeling satisfied and vibrantly healthy.
Charles Barkley was a big spokesperson for WW – just saw him on TV and not sure if he had long term results

It is not about size of meal
        – it is “eating like your life depends on it”
And you have youth on your side –
But the human pancreas was not meant to eat the sugar (and many carbs are processed like sugar) the way we do –
And then industrial oils are bad bad bad
Anything with canola oil – vegetable oil and soybean oil (rapeseed peanut and sunflower) is hurting you at the cellular level and it slowly leaves you vulnerable to disease

It is all about a health terrain!
It is how the organs are and what feeds them – and what feeds your brain – keeps your lungs thriving and most of all – supports liver health.

Thanks for letting me speak up because normally I walk away and don’t want to start conflict with anyone –
        I won’t mention it anymore
But size of those meals matter not
        To me

It is content – quality and the way the body needs better to thrive

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Wait! What?!

WW is not expensive….You think $40 a month is expensive? You also mentioned something about “extra packaging” tinges the food. What “extra packaging”? What are you talking about? I don’t get/buy any food from WW. I prepare my own meals. I think you might have Weight Watchers confused with another program.

Of course, you should speak up. I welcome different opinions on my blogs. Knowledge helps me grow and as long as the information presented is done in a respectful, non-condescending (I don’t even know if this is a word 😁) manner then I have no problems with it.

Weight Watchers has been around since 1963. It has been researched and reevaluated and reformed hundreds of times in order to keep up with the changing times while still ensuring sustainability and success. In fact, the program now differs a little bit now from when I had done it in 2010, back then they didn’t have any food with zero points.

I beg to differ, I believe portion control is a healthier approach to eating than complete elimination of certain food groups. It works best for me.

Obviously, I can only speak for myself because I know me best but I know I can thrive on WW for the rest of my life. Will I have moments of weakness where I’ll eat the entire bag of chips instead of a cup of chips? Sure! However, as long as I get back on track the very next day and those moments of weaknesses are few and far between then it is something I can do for the rest of my life and I plan to. Once I get to my goal weight I plan on switching to the maintenance part of the program.

Further, I actually know someone, who has been on WW since 1967. Yessss! 1967! Beth is a dear acquaintance of mine and I have always admired how trim and healthy she is even though she is a senior citizen. Well, I found out recently that Beth is a lifetime member of WW, if that doesn’t prove sustainability then nothing else will.

I appreciate your opinion, P, I really do but I do not agree with you at all. Maybe the sugar and the oils are “bad” like you said but I am 45 years old and I have been eating sugar and cooking with olive oil and other types of oils all my life, and at my last physical, in February, my general internist was very pleased with my health and commended me on adapting a healthier way of living and wished me “continued success on Weight Watchers.” I am sure that accounts for something.

      3. Hi – thanks for the reply and I really like you even more now – but I do regret speaking up – hey – but I already did and so now want to not go there any more –
        And you are right –
if it works for you then that is the success
And I hope it gives you long term results that also gives you a robust “terrain” because the gut is the second brain – and the human bury has so much disease right now because the refined carbs are processed like sugar – the Grains are hard on the gut – and the industrial oils are damaging to the bidy – and any eating plan that has those three is “pulling from health” in the long run…
But seriously R – if this works for you – congrats and I hope you rock that next New Year’s Eve dress!

      4. Hey P, please don’t regret speaking up. Despite my resistance and opinion, you have given me food for thought. I am pretty sure with my personality I am going to research what you’ve told me. I like to be in the know.

I am, as always, appreciative of our discourses.

      5. Oh whew – but i feel like this is making a “withdrawal” when we are still just getting to know each other “making deposits”
And so let’s move on to more fun topics –
Oh – and please let me know if you have any “jeans and blazer ” story – I have a “what to wear post” I want to do later this month and this time I am trying to get blogger stories –
        Or anything fun.
Somit can relate to jeans – or a blazer – or the combo
(And if no story – no worries – I’ll check In with you with a future topic – I am trying to do my what to wear posts monthly –

      6. Fair enough, P.

I’ll think about a jeans and blazer story. Nothing comes readily to mind at this moment.

I’ll look forward to your “What to Wear” posts. That’s a fantastic idea actually.

  15. I have joined WW twice. Lost 15 pounds over and over and over again. It works awesome for some people. It only works for 15 lbs for me. I’ve already put about 8 back on even trying to follow without the meetings. It’s frustrating.

    BUT!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! WTG!! WOOT WOOT!!!

    1. You can’t break through the 15 on plateau, huh?!

I steadily lost weight every week at an average of 1 to 2 lbs per week until I hit 15 lbs down and then it took me a whole month to break through the 15 plateau and keep going. My scale would tell me I lost 15 and then 2 days later the same scale would tell me I gained 3 lbs. I kept yo-yo ing at the 15 to 18 lbs down loss until I broke through the 15 lb and got to 20 lbs down and here we are again with the same up and down rollercoaster of losing today and gaining it back tomorrow.

The only advice I can give you (not that you asked for any but I’m feeling generous today πŸ™‚) is to keep going, just freaking go through the motions, keep doing what you were doing that caused you to lose the 15 lbs in the first place. Whether or not the scale budges just keep going, rinse and repeat and eventually you’ll bust through the plateaus. Maybe even amp up the cardio a little or whatever exercise you were doing. You’ll eventually get through that godforsaken plateau. I promise you that!

Patience and consistency, Boo, patience and consistency.

  16. You go girl! You look fabulous! Also I understand totally how you feel. Gaining weight then trying to lose it seems so hard at times. I found myself like that at the beginning of last year, I worked out a lot but I wouldn’t lose. Then I went to go see my doctor and found out that I am insulin resistant. So he put me on meds and the keto diet (which has worked wonders for me, because I like veggies, lol) and I now can run/walk more than a mile without passing out cold! I also recently began using a rowing machine to workout my upper body because I started noticing my arms were turning into batwings (ugh horrid). But I’ve lost 30 lbs and need 20 more to go to get to my “normal” weight. So stay motivated and push yourself that’s the key ;). Again girl you look fabulous! Wish I could pull off wearing boots like those, cellulite has taken over my thighs and ugh….

    1. Hey Huntress Darling – Yaaay to your 30-lb weight loss. It feels fantastic, doesn’t it?

Keto has been working for a lot of people I know so I am not knocking it. We all know our likes and dislikes and know what will last long term for us. I am so glad you have found “your diet” that works for “you”. Maybe you’d hate WW, it’s not for everybody. Those little itty bitty amount of points kill me sometimes. Like, how do thry expect an adult female to survive on that?! πŸ˜‚ Thank God for activity points or I would have given up a helluva long time ago.

I have heard and read that the rowing machine works wonders. I have tried it a few times but has never committed to it as a regular part of my workout routine. Maybe I should give a try again with an open mind. LMAO @ “bat wings”….Girl, tell me about it! Sheesh! Are they finally disappearing?

Thanks for the encouragement Huntress Darling. Now let me go catch up on your posts. I have been MIA for a while. 😁

    1. Hey Paula – Long time. How are you Dear?

To be fair to my husband he never ever used the word “fat”; he asked if I had “gained weight” and the truth is that I had and he was finally starting to notice. He wasn’t mean or malicious when he asked either. It was kind of matter of fact, like kinda observant. I’m actually surprised it took him that long to notice and I am glad, oh so glad, he finally did and said something. It was the extra push that I needed to get serious.

I thought about the manner in which my husband would be perceived while I wrote the article but I had to remain authentic and true to the facts. I promise you Greg is the sweetest, kindest guy and he would never ever intentionally hurt my feelings. Totally not his style.

Thanks for reading, Paula. You know I always value your input.

  19. That’s wonderful…. congrats!
I did something similar 5 years ago. Juicing, protein smoothies, portion control, even bought a treadmill. I lost 24 lbs and was loving myself. Then due to medical issues and a full abdominal hysterectomy I was thrown into full menopause. Fatigue, weight gain, hot flashes, trouble sleeping… I had every symptom. Now I feel like a total slug. A 35 lb heavier slug. Wish you lived closer… I need motivation!

    1. Oh nooo! No! No! No to the medical issues. I am so sorry to hear that. Yes, that would definitely slow down anyone even with the greatest determination. Geez, that sucks!

Yep, having someone close by does help with the motivation. My next door neighbor is a workout fiend and trainer and just watching her leave her house in her gym clothes headed for the gym is sometimes all the motivation I need.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate the words of encouragement. πŸ™‚
